As we continue on the journey to release Scoutbook Lite in the 2nd quarter of this year, there have been some questions circulating. Here are some updates.
I thought that Scoutbook Lite was going to be released in the 2nd quarter of this year. We still expect to release Scoutbook Lite sometime during these next few months, and an exact release date has not been confirmed. This approach is deliberate, as we are taking appropriate steps to have developers finish final coding and user interfaces—and engaging selected volunteers with testing and evaluation of this new tool.
How does someone access Scoutbook Lite? We have not yet finalized the process to access Scoutbook Lite. Once it is available, we will push out heavy communications about this via Bryan on Scouting Blog and the Scout Executive Council Packet.
Can I get a preview of Scoutbook Lite? If you expect to attend (or you know volunteers or staff attending) the National Annual Meeting in Dallas http://nam.scouting.org/ , encourage them to stop by the “Scoutbook section” of the exhibit hall for more info.
What date will Internet Advancement portal be closed? This will happen after the release of Scoutbook Lite, so that units will always have a venue for submitting advancement records online.
Does Scoutbook still have the ability to upload roster and advancement data as documented in this FAQ page? https://www.scoutbook.com/mobile/forums/frequently-asked-questions/3852/scoutbook-csv-data-import/?Search=uploading+csv
Yes, Scoutbook can still upload roster and advancement data from other sources. This will not go away as individuals need a way to get their historical detailed data into Scoutbook. There will be a process enabling the upload of advancements via a CSV file in Scoutbook Lite.
Is there a council information packet we can use to communicate with our volunteers on our website and in trainings other than what was previously listed on the Bryan on Scouting blog?
We are looking at developing some communications materials to help with this. Candidly, we are creating Scoutbook Lite with a simple user interface that volunteers (and those promoting this online tool) will find easy to understand and use.
Is Scoutbook Lite optimized for desktop and mobile? We’ve all heard “mobile first” but Scoutbook Lite is even better. Professional user experience designers have worked hard to optimize your user experience for both your desktop display, mobile tablets, and smart phones.
What other features can we expect to see in the future on Scoutbook Lite? Replacing Internet Advancement is just the first release of Scoutbook Lite. In the future, you will also experience features that track Service Hours, Hiking Logs, and Camping Logs.
So, what is the difference between Scoutbook and Scoutbook Lite? Scoutbook Lite will be a reporting tool, not a tracking tool like Scoutbook. When released, it will initially have the features and replace Internet Advancement—and later will track service hours, camping nights, and hikes. Scoutbook is an advancement/hiking/camping/service hours tracking tool that also has leadership training tracking, unit rosters, email and texting tools, unit forums, calendar features, and payment logs. Scoutbook Lite is a free resource to all units, while Scoutbook has many more features and is available as a paid subscription for units.

Developing a separate but less functional scoutbook lite in order to accomplish a database move with 2 separate interfaces ( scoutbook vs lite) will also limit functionality in the API product meaning a person looking for advancement data on their troop (lite) may or may not have the same schema to extract their data , leaving a support nightmare . Also if the troop chooses to move eventually to the paid version will all their data be migrated from the scoutbook lite to the “real” scoutbook ?
I also have a couple questions that were not answered or am still unclear of. Q: Who "requires" access to SBL? (Assuming that it's initial features are driven toward the Advancement Chair duties.) Should other key personnel have access? Will every organization have the same SBL account or are these accounts user specific? Q: How will SBL hierarchy be pushed out? Will each counsel have a master account with sub-accounts for Troops, Packs, Ventures, etc.? Or will each unit have to register for a SBL account and then align their own account to their perspective Counsels where an "approver/verifier" will have to authenticate the account?
Would you wtite us at SUACInformation@gmail.com ?
Currently the 3rd party tools upload a csv file to Internet Advancement. Some of the tools hide the process from the users.
Your council is incorrect. Scoutbook and Scoutbook Lite will both write to the Scoutbook database and until ScoutNet is retired will sync with ScoutNet. A unit will only use Scoutbook or Scoutbook Lite, not both.
Have your council contact BSA IT if they have further questions. They have the contact information.
~3 years ago I was CM and enrolled my pack in SB. Loved it! Son crossed to a troop 18 mo ago that doesn't use SB. I subscribed as family to keep using with him. As of now the troop is sticking to its guns using Troopmaster. What happens when I convince them to go full SB or even when SBL is introduced and items (awards, ranks, dates, logs, etc) don't perfectly match what I entered?
Not expecting a full reply here. Just acknowledgement that there will be communications issued when SBL goes live, how family subscribers can deal with discrepancies once a troop subscribes to SB, or your question just set things back X months.
Thx!
