As mentioned before, the Scoutbook database will be the database of record for advancement data. In preparation, Internet Advancement will be retired and replaced in 2018 by a system named “Scoutbook Lite.” Scoutbook Lite will have the major features of Internet Advancement.
Scoutbook Lite is for units that don't use Scoutbook. It replaces Internet Advancement and will be free to all registered BSA units. There is nothing in Scoutbook Lite that is not also in Scoutbook and they both write to the same database and will be able to see the data entered from either application. You can think of Scoutbook Lite as the ‘no frills – data entry’ version and Scoutbook as the ‘full featured’ unit management application; both writing to the same database.
The following is more information on Scoutbook Lite, the free replacement for Internet Advancement.
An overarching concern of BSA IT is that there are too many computer tools for volunteers to be familiar with—as they keep track of all the key information they need to access and report.
With that in mind, the BSA will start to combine some of the individual tools in our arsenal. With the new Scoutbook Lite, BSA intends to unify and bring under one interface as many unit leader tasks as possible—with the unit leader only needing a single access.
When released, Scoutbook Lite will initially replace the legacy Internet Advancement tool. These additional functions are also planned to be added as soon as possible: Service Hour Reporting, Internet Rechartering (for unit leaders), camping logs, and more.
The main difference between Scoutbook and Scoutbook Lite is that the full version of Scoutbook provides unit leaders greater flexibility.
For example, BSA is presently working on a mobile app for Scouts, who can record their advancement and achievements, and then have the unit leader go into the full version of Scoutbook and approve them.
Additionally, Scoutbook already includes calendars, reminders, messaging, and unit/Scout financial (still in Beta) features.
There have been some concerns expressed that BSA will abandon the ability of units to use 3rd party Unit Management Software (UMS) to bulk upload advancement information.
The BSA anticipates that Scoutbook Lite will continue to allow bulk upload of data via a defined CSV format. Since there are so many 3rd party options available, BSA will require that the 3rd party UMS exports comply with BSA’s prescribed format.
And if they do not, then it would fall to the unit leaders to make it so. For example, unit leaders would need to make sure that data fields for importation via Scoutbook Lite are in the right order.
So, for those who want to hang on to their existing UMS, they will still be able to upload CSV advancement data. It would just be uploaded to Scoutbook Lite instead of to Internet Advancement.
Third party UMS software such as Troopmaster may in the future be able to use APIs that will be allowed to directly read data from Scoutbook Lite, but not at this time.
For those volunteers interested in learning more about the APIs being developed by the BSA, please contact Tom Jansen directly at Thomas.Jansen@Scouting.org.
Tom will reach out to everyone who contacts him, and he will often connect by phone if that helps in the identification of your needs and interests.
NEW USER GUIDES AVAILABLE
We have several new user guides available that can be used to help present Scoutbook to new parents and leaders. The guides are available here: http://bit.ly/scoutbook
Internet Advancement is being retired. When it is, all units will use either Scoutbook or Scoutbook Lite to transmit advancement data to the BSA.
Scoutbook Lite is a SUBSET of Scoutbook. The BSA must replace Internet Advancement as the software platform it runs on is no longer supported by the vendor. The BSA had a choice, write a replacement from the ground up or start with Scoutbook and create a system that is Scoutbook with reduced features. If you use Scoutbook, you will not need to use Scoutbook Lite. Scoutbook development is continuing while Scoutbook Lite is developed. You will see many improvements in Scoutbook later this year including a major calendar system update.

Our troop has been using it now several years and we love it! Plus the cost for SB is very good compared to the others. It will be even better if more development is done on reporting. We would like to be able to report on finance, i.e. what Scouts owe as an example, fundraising credits etc. so I’m pleased to hear some work is being done there too!
Payment Log reports were released a few weeks ago.
No, Scoutbook Lite will only provide what Internet Advancement provides. The ability to enter completion dates into the system, it will not track advancements nor will it offer the rest of what Scoutbook offers. It does not support parents seeing advancement nor Scouts seeing advancements. Scoutbook Lite just replaces Internet Advancement which is going away.
For setting up parents, see the guide here: http://bit.ly/2cEIETx
James,
We have user guides here: http://bit.ly/scoutbook
The Feature Assistant Extension for Chrome and Firefox (search the Google or Firefox extension stores for Scoutbook) provides a way to read a spreadsheet and automatically invite parents. It is much easier than manually entering the parents into Scoutbook.
My question: Of course scoutbook updates will flow into the back end database of Internet Advancement/Scoutbook Lite. However, will any updates made directly to Internet Advancement or (future) Scoutbook Lite flow INTO scoutbook? If so, I wouldn't need to update all the records and could just wait until they're updated from the council after rank items are submitted, correct?
Since your COR enabled sync, you may be able to get the unit to allow you to take the paper advancement report and enter/approve the data in Scoutbook or even help the advancement chair by entering the data in Scoutbook for them and printing the report needed for the Scout Shop. After they see how easy it is, they may agree to start using Scoutbook themselves.

The numbers are correct - I got them from our roster in Internet Advancement. I don't have any idea where these other accounts are. How can I fix this?
Currently there is no plan for a ScoutBook Lite app. It will be a web site, just like Internet Advancement today.
I'm one of the key 3 but it wont let me do the sync. I'm a current assistant scoutmaster/advancement chair and set up Scoutbook to help me keep track of everything the boys do. So why can't I do/get the sync done?

The BSA has not released any information on how to use Scoutbook Lite when it is released. That information will be presented closer to the time when Scoutbook Lite becomes available.
For help with Scoutbook, click on the SUAC logo below my trained strip. There are many help documents there.
Scoutbook costs $1/Scout/year if you have 40 or more Scouts. Scoutbook Lite will be free but will only track completions, the same as Internet Advancement. Scoutbook tracks individual requirements for each award, rank, badge, etc, has a calendar and communications systems. You will not need to move from Scoutbook to Scoutbook Lite. Scoutbook Lite is a subset of Scoutbook.
I ask 'will there be a full Scoutbook mobile app?' Because the mobile website is not that user-friendly.
What is it that's not so user friendly with the website? An app doesn't automatically cure those things. If there are specific issues, we can talk to the developers about correcting them on both the app and the web app. (no promises on when or if those enhancements would be completed, since they would have to be prioritized)
Thank You
Scoutbook Lite won't be available for months. Units will get plenty of information about it prior to it being rolled out
Bill: Thanks for this good news. Something about trying to get a new program up and running, and training leaders, youth, and parents in less than a month is not something any leader would look forward too. Look forward to the Lite version release.
Look at your unit roster in Scoutbook for the leaders with 2 keys next to their names. These are your unit admins. Any of them can add you as an admin.
Please post in the Using Scoutbook forum where we can better help you. The blogs are not the best place to for us to help as we are not notified of new posts. We have volunteers in the forums that will offer to do a remote connection with you so they can see exactly what you are seeing.
FYI: Bill Nelson did the remote connection with me. He's the gentleman that said he'd never seen this before, etc. I emailed AGAIN and got the auto reply AGAIN but no other responses. I can't tell you how frustrating this all has been. I know other people like Scoutbook but I'm not seeing the appeal yet when I can't get anyone to help. So many emails unanswered or I'm left hanging!
We would like to use a different online advancement tracking system that currently uses the CSV import feature. We need to know if that feature will continue.
