Happy New Year!!  I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday with friends and family.

The Scoutbook team has been hard at work over the holiday period and into the first two weeks of the year adding the new 2016 Boy Scout requirements, continuing to update the 2015 Cub Scout program, and making Scoutbook faster and more reliable. More details further down.

We continue to work toward our ultimate goal of making Scoutbook the one place for units to track all of their activities. We want to eliminate the dual data entry and data synchronization with other BSA systems, creating a simple, seamless experience for you and your Scouts.

And for that, we need your help.

Please ensure your Scoutbook profiles for all youth and adults contain

  • Postal address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • BSA member IDs

Also, for each unit leader, please create an account on my.scouting.org

And now, here are the details of recent Scoutbook updates.

  • 2016 Boy Scout requirements and reporting
  • Parents are cc’ed on all messages to Scouts rather than receiving a duplicate email
  • Photo uploads are fixed in Personal Notepad
  • Forum counters are fixed
  • Numerous modifications to improve site performance

The team is working on the following for release soon:

  • New Cub Scout program in file export/backups completed
  • New Cub Scout program updates in advancement reports
  • Fix so that Webelos/Arrow of Light elective adventures are applied to only one or the other rank
  • Revised Cub Scout World Conservation Award and Nova Award requirements

    Mr. Director,
Many packs, troops, etc. are interested in a solution to financial
tracking for their units. Why try to design new software in Scout Book If you can consider Quicken Basic Software for inclusion as an OEM package in/ or with Scout Book you would be leaps and bounds ahead in availability for the Scouting Family. Contact Mr. Eric Dunn at Intuit in Mt. View, CA. I am sure he or an associate will be interested in your problem.

    Bon chance!

When will Venturing be added???????? In the time the new Venturing program has rolled out the new cub scout and boy scout program have both rolled out and been updated in scoutbook for users.....while the Venturing program continues to wait. It is very frustrating always being on the back burner...at least that is how it feels. Please advise. Should crews just give up on waiting for this program and start creating their own?

I am sure that this has been a massive task to migrate to the BSA and update the systems and I really like where you are headed.
Is BSA going to give you more resources to work on the updates? There are many things that applications like Troop Master offered that Scout Book has yet to address - reporting is a key area for additions as an example.
Really like the app, but we are getting pressure because we migrated and the advancement chair cannot do their job without manually tracking items that would be normal reports in other products.

A big thank you to the Scoutbook team! These updates are very welcome. The increased communication and constant improvement is much appreciated.

As for those who continue to ask about when things are coming, please be patient. There is only so much that can be done at one time and I fell that things are being proritized in the correct order. My understanding is that Scoutbook was purchased to be the My.Scouting.org section for advancement. Anyone who wishes for Scoutbook to be something more(for example, an accounting software) probably needs to look for these tools elsewhere.

    Best in scouting!

Clearly ScoutBook was more than a tool for managing advancement even before the BSA purchased it and regardless who owns it is just one application of several that provide for unit management. If ScoutBook is to stand out as an excellent solution among all the other applications it needs to satisfy the comprehensive needs of unit leaders who will, but should not have to, look elsewhere.

I appreciate the investment and hard work to improve the system and encourage eventual enhancements to include accounting and finance. The suggestion to integrate with Quicken is extremely appealing.

Glad to hear that the advancement report updates are in the near-term pipeline. Many Den Leaders are getting to the stage where we are checking to figure out which adventure requirements our Scouts who haven't yet completed rank are missing, and trying to plan "catch-up" meetings to get these missing pieces in place. Being able to identify exactly which adventure requirements each Scout has or has not completed (e.g. via Report Builder) will go a long way toward preserving what's left of my hair. I really miss this functionality from Report Builder under the old Achievement program. I'm looking forward to having it again with the Adventures.

Greg, according to the FAQ at http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/CubScouts/FAQS/joining.aspx#aa Cub Scouts is still for boys in 1st through 5th grades. I believe Lions is still a test program, though all councils performing the test are using the same nationally produced materials. A search of scouting.org for Lion does not turn up the Lion Cub program. The Lion patch can now be ordered from scoutstuff.org but the handbook is not yet available.

So, there are signs that Lion Cubs is getting closer to becoming a national program, I don't believe it is there yet.

I am very disappointed that the new Cub Scout World Conservation Award and Nova Award requirements aren't ready to be deployed. The requirements were made public more than 6 mos ago. While I appreciate having an old and new track of requirements may be confusing for some users having to track the information on my own spreadsheet since July (an earlier for other issues) defeats the purpose of using Scoutbook in the first place. We had the same problem with old vs new adventure loops too. Scouting is a year round program and changes are announced well in advance. You're updating programming not writing it from scratch. When asked, I do not recommend this product.

Is there anything in the works for the tracking of additional awards not tracked by BSA? The program we use now I can enter an award that our Pack can earn, with Scoutbook I will have to manually track that award and with that can come mistakes. I appreciate all the work and changes you are all making but my pack hesitates the move until we can track awards better and we have more options for printing advancement reports.

@Director, and all of SB team, This is a great product. There are a few things that are causing us to maintain dual records until the features are fully implemented. One big thing is OA management for youth and adult; also, being able to enter youth-earned awards, positions, and advancement for someone who is an adult is important as well. Finally, not all awards and positions are entered. Would like to see a more complete list - including retired ones.

    Alicia,

The Venturing Module is not yet a part of Scoutbook. BSA is still looking at the timeline for rounding out current modules and further program updates. There is not YET a timeline for Venturing, Sea Scouts, or Varsity being added to Scoutbook. Any discussion about current Venturing Module usage within Scoutbook is referring to a 20-Unit PRE-Beta that exists from prior to the BSA Acquiring Scoutbook. That PRE-Beta has not moved forward since that time.

Worst thing you can do is drive good people toward apathy, and I am moving toward apathy. I'm sorry to say that I am seeing this more and more in leadership ranks of Scouting, driving passionate volunteers to apathy. I know there is a business to running Scouting, and it's tough these days, but everything we do MUST prioritize the youth. Not sure what to do to help, saying nothing doesn't seem like a good idea.

I can't export M. B. P.O. into scout net because it calls for the council info to be put into the troop profile. I put the unit ID and password into the profile but for safety reasons it doesn't store it. For over a year I have ben putting all ranks and M.B into the council record and then importing it back to Scoutbook and it works great. This time I had 19 Chess M.B. and thought I would give Scoutbook a chance because all of the badges were the same date.

Individual Advancement Report- The nice black border was taken off of the heading and the Scoutbook Logo and printing date are so low on the page that they don't print. Can you fix this? Also a boy's birthdate in the title block would be helpful when moving them to Varsity or Venture patrols. Those patrols are where I keep the Varsity and Venturing boys while you are working those two groups.

I have found a few housekeeping items that you might want to take a look at. First, the arrow of light award date does not "move" from the cub side to the boy side when moving Webelos scouts over. Second I have found that some of our "trained" leaders have all the classes necessary but for some reason do not have the "100% Trained" status. Lastly...this is a suggestion...Add a "+" item or drop down portion to the individual scout page for all their Cub Scout history. This would be very helpful so that if a person needs/wants to look back at their accomplishments they can do so.

Eric, the AOL date is a known issue.

There have been reports in the forum that if a leader is 100% trained but doesn't get the trained indication, you can delete YPT from his training record in Scoutbook then resync training. This will restore the trained patch for that leader.

@Eric Turner, Some leaders may not be classified as "Trained" for a few reasons even though they have the training. First, it seems that on Scoutbook WS10 is the only accepted troop committee member training, not S10 since the latter's course number expired on 12/31/2011; I have already reported this because S10 does not technically have an expiration for the Scouter, but I'm not holding my breath. Second, (Asst) Scoutmaster S24 and S11 courses are date sensitive and must be taken relatively close together to count for "Trained". I learned about the (Asst) Scoutmaster S24/S11 date requirement in January at the Council Training Chair Conference at Sea Base. I'm not sure if either of these apply to you, but it is worth a check.

With lions being only a pilot program it's not tracked in Scoutbook. I don't know if they are in IA for piloting councils/units, but even if it were I wouldn't expect a sync between the two.

Unless you mean it's breaking the sync for the other scouts as well? Can you clarify what you mean?

Unless I'm missing something, I'm a little confused. The "occasional weekly" blog which was much welcomed after very little communication for weeks and months at a time. However, it has been almost 6 weeks since the last post. I know all updates aren't going to be the same, some will be much bigger in positive messages and fixes than others. However, I think everyone was happy with the regular updates every week or two. I can say that the lack of recent communication is very unwelcome, and speaks volumes on progress. As difficult as it is, the slow crawl Scoutbook has taken to get forward progress again after taking months to figure out a post-BSA takeover plan (and should be much applauded for that), seems to be slowing down again instead of continuing. Looking forward to some point (hopefully in the near future) in which we will see both progress and regular communication, about the plan and progress, ongoing without being prompted/reminded to do either.

Bob - I need to give a Scoutbook overview and update at both Roundtable and University of Scouting in next week. Would love the latest on what you have up for development in the next 3-6 months to share with your growing fan base.

Hi Steve. Last year the BSA moved me into a new role as a User Advocate for Scoutbook. I'm still part of the team and excited for the future of Scoutbook!

Bob-I will be presenting 2 session on scoutbook for new users at our University of Scouting this April. I would love to be able to tell them about all upcoming rollouts of new things as well as major fixes (such as old vs new requirements for awards ). Is there a way to get that information other than what I can find in the forums?

Hi Steve. To better answer your question, Bob stated in his introductory blog, the BSA assigned another company to be in charge of all code development on Scoutbook. The transition occurred around summer last year. I do not offer guidance or have any control over the code.

I do however work closely with Bob Scott and the team and am hopeful 2016 will be the year of some big improvements to Scoutbook!

Micah, send me an email at Scoutbook@ScottFisher.net with more detail about your presentation. Size of audience, length of presentation, significant LDS representation (or not), etc. Our presentation do not contain a future roadmap. That is the function of the Blog within Scoutbook. For future development plans and development releases, Users must refer to the Scoutbook site itself. For other aspects of your presentation, we are actively compiling and providing a consistent presentation approach as these presentations approach.

What should I tell the confused parents and frustrated leaders in my pack about the lack of progress on the Cub Scout program update? We're quickly coming up on the one year anniversary of the new program launch, and many things still don't work. Communication has dropped to zero again, except for occasional posts about performance fixes that nobody cares about because so many things are broken. The lack of communication is going to lead to a rising tide of discontent. My committee is starting to talk about dropping Scoutbook, and as the one-time champion for Scoutbook in my pack, I have nothing I can say in response.

Please...give me something positive to say to them...

Scoutbook has said for a long time, " District, council, regional and national positions are coming soon;" and re: adult awards: "Awards are coming soon." But they have not been realized. These features will be exceptionally helpful for nominating adult leaders for awards. I understand these statements have been on Scoutbook since before BSA bought it. But yet these statements remain. Please make them truthful by adding these functionalities. Our unit is paying for over 60 memberships. Please put our money to work for us.

How does one add a youth who is still a member of another unit that I am not associated with? Specifically, I am the Advisor for a Venture Crew. I am also an ASM for a Troop. However, the youth member in question is a boy scout from a different troop than mine. I cannot end his association with the other troop, nor can I associate him with my troop but I need to add him to my Venture Crew Roster. Help!
