Pearl Harbor Rememberance Day!

Last week was a busy one for the Scoutbook team.  We released the updated Cub Scout Outdoor Award requirements on 12/2 as noted in the change log. https://www.scoutbook.com/mobile/forums/change-log/936/progress-on-outdoor-activity-award/.  In the process we created an issue with all of the awards and adventure information flowing correctly thru the needs approving/purchasing/awarding reports and the counters for those reports.  The team worked hard Friday and a fix for these issues was released Friday afternoon around 3:30.  See the change lot at https://www.scoutbook.com/mobile/forums/change-log/2603/needs-purchasing-report/ for the latest on this issue.

On Thrusday we release a refresh of the site to move Tiger Cub to Tiger in all appropriate locations.  That same day we change the look of toggle switches to make it more visibilly apparent which status a switch is in.

Today there have been two releases of a technical nature (parameterizing frequent queries) in our ongoing work to improve the sites performance and response time, especially at peak usage hours.  There are several more updates of this nature moving thru the workflow over the next week.

The next week or so will focus on making sure that Scoutbook is positioned to support the new 2016 Boy Scout Requirements when they become official on 1/4/2015.  See www.scouting.org/programupdates for more information on these requirement changes, transition process, etc.  Additionally over the next week we will continue working on getting the forum counters correctly reflecting unread forum entries.

Looking forward to next year, we will be starting the planning and agile development steps towards integration of Scoutbook and BSA's person profile database, Akela.  Over 2016 this will open up opportunities for two-way transfer of advancement, training, profile and other data.  What can you do now to prepare for this process?  While the process will be largely behind the scenes at first, there are some actions that individuals can take now:

  1. If you are a registered member, put your member ID in your Scoutbook profile
  2. If you do not have a My.Scouting.org account, create one using the same profile information (name, address, email, member ID, etc.) as you use for Scoutbook.
  3. If you do have a My.Scouting.org account, check your profile information to make sure that Scoutbook and My.Scouting.org information matches.

That's it for now.  As always, thank you for your support of Scoutbook.

Bob - thanks for the update. It is not always easy to make changes and have everything be perfect. There are always little tags and hooks that were not anticipated. Keep up the great work you and your team do. I do look forward to better integration with the core system at BSA.

    Bob,

I was slightly worried after not seeing an update from you on Friday, and expected the response from the community to be just as harsh as in recent weeks. After reading today's post, my fears were misplaced. Thank you so much for listening to the community and crafting your updates to align with what we requested. I have loved the Scoutbook product since before it was acquired by BSA, and feel that the development and merge has finally moved from the storming phase into norming. I cannot wait to see the progress, upgrades, and improvements to come, especially once the team moves into the performing phaze. Thank you for keeping us updated.

I know we are just seeing the TIP of the iceberg now but to start seeing the progress break through is very exciting. Keep the conversations flowing. As the Users present (and more importantly, as we refine) ideas for Scoutbook, the Development Team will be prioritizing these initiatives and working on them to regularly improve upon Scoutbook.

Most importantly, Scoutbook is a tool that helps all of the Scouters truly support the SCOUT.

Keep up the good work BSA!

Bob, a couple of members of the Scoutbook User Advisory Council have noticed a couple of places (images) where the Tiger Cub update to Tiger has not kicked in. Everything else is looking good. In fact, in presenting at a University of Scouting over the weekend, there was a brief discussion that, even in peak times, the updates to Scoutbook are speeding things up -- EVEN AS -- the Userbase is growing so quickly!

I have noticed some of my reports that I created in report builder that reflect the "old" Webelos program and arrow of light requirements show the new ones regardless of which selection is made. Might check this out as I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Bob; Thank you. A number of leaders in my Troop and District are pretty worried about the availability of Scoutbook to reflect the 2016 BSA advancement changes on time. Fingers and toes are crossed for an early January, 2016 release date.

2015-12-08: Although the new requirements become effective on Friday, 1 January 2016, the planned release date for the Scoutbook major update including the new 2016 Boy Scout requirements is Monday, 4 January 2016; (not 1/4/2015 which I am sure is a typographical error). Scoutbook makes planned update releases on Monday through Friday.

There is a one year transition period when both the old and new requirements are in effect subject to the rules specified in the notes on Transitioning to the 2016 Boy Scout Requirements, 7/28/2014, and the Boy Scout Requirements FAQs, 8/29/2015, which may be found on the BSA Program Updates web page cited in orginal post.

So, the new Boy Scout requirements, which will be released next month, have priority over the new Cub Scout requirements, which were released 6 months ago?

Cross-posting from bugs forum thread topic of "webelos elective adventures double counted for both webelos and arrow of light. "

Bumping to top of list as this problem is still occurring. Considering cross-posting or adding this comment to the blog page. Now that some of my Webelos 1s have earned their webelos patch it is showing their electives for AOL complete using the ones used for Webelos. The double dipping issue is hard to figure out if a scout has only done 3 or 4 electives. Even worse is a parent thinking their son is further along immediately after ranking to see 2 of his 7 pins complete!

Also Webelos 2's working on their AOL who happen to complete some of the required Webelos 1 adventure pins (first responder is the big one for our den and we allowed the 5th graders to be a part of it) is showing no credit for it in the elective catagory. Will this be an option as it has been explained at roundtable as an acceptable practice.

Any timeline for this to be resolved is greatly appreciated as there has been no traction since the forum topic started 6 months ago.

On a sidenote, the usability factor of scoutbook is drastically improving during peak hours so the changes you are doing is making a world of difference for us! Thank you for your hard work.

Here are some of the outstanding problems with the Cub Scout program transition:

Arrow of Light elective adventures implemented incorrectly. (It is satisfying the 3 elective requirements with 2 that have already been used to satisfy the Webelos requirement.)
Webelos rank mini-report does not work correctly. (I suspect the other ranks do not work either, but I have not verified.)
Nova/STEM awards not updated. (And new awards missing.)
    World Conservation Award not updated.
Sports and Academics Program has prominence in UI, even though it is an obsolete program, confusing parents.

I had entered in Outdoor Activity Awards for some of my boys a few weeks ago. Now that it has been updated to reflect the new requirements (thank you!) it shows that the boys earned it on their main profile page (with a picture of the patch or Wolf track pin). The problem is, if you go into their awards section, it does not show that it is completed, and all of the items that I had checked off as completed were not there. When I saw this, I entered the info again for one of my boys. Now it shows he has earned two Wolf track pins when he really hasn't. How do I fix?

I had to switch my scouts back to the 2010 requirements, remove the completion from the old requirements, then switch back to 2015. Working with multiple scouts at a time it didn't take that long, but unfortunately that's the only way to fix it.

Note, you really don't have to remove all the individual checks, just remove the completion date and approvals.

Ken so the "fix" for elective double dipping is to change completition dates so the correct electives show up for the aol patch? I'm hesitant to do this for webelos 1s who earned their webelos patch under the new program where they used those electives for the webelos patch. If that is how it works and there is no timetable on a fix I'll try that out. Currently I'm just writing a lot in the note section for each scout. Thanks for that info.

Joe-thanks for the list. The prominence of the old belt loop program is an annoyance .

Anyone know why previously recorded/earned Outdoor awards and pins vanished? My Bear earned his patch last year as a Wolf and this summer as a Bear and now it's gone. Would IA have this logged so I can re-enter? I'm not sure if it was a bug or not with the update. Also, we are completing the Supernova under the old requirements since we started last year (we'll finish before the 12-15 deadline). Will that also "disappear" when the requirements are updated? Thanks.

Gabe, my scouts past Outdoor Activity Awards did not vanish. My Bears, for example, show the Tiger and Wolf awards under the old requirements, and their Bear requirement under the 2015 requirements.

Now, if you recorded his Bear award under the old requirement, the update "hid" that when the 2015 requirements were put in place, but the pin/patch would still be on his profile page. If you toggle his Bear rank back to 2010, you'll see the old completion. I removed the completion from the old requirements then recorded it under the 2015 requirements, so that only the correct one shows.

Those Cub Leaders are a busy bunch. All I want for Christmas is for the boys birthdate to appear in the title block of the individual advancement sheet. This would help when tracking the boys.

@Bill Wells, as I understand it, boys can continue working on any rank using the 2015 requirements at any point in 2016 until they achieve that rank. At that point, they need to start using the 2016 requirements, with the exception that boys Scout rank through Second Class can continue working on all ranks through First Class in 2016 using the 2015 requirements. Is that roughly correct?

@Arron W. - That's how I see it, too, with the addition that any Boy Scout has the option to start using the 2016 requirements immediately. I suspect that few will want to switch in the middle, but the option is there.

Aaron, you got it. A scout can choose to transition immediately, or finish the rank they're on: T-1st can work up to First Class under the old, then switch to Star under the new. Star and above finish the rank they are currently working on then use the new for the next rank.

New Scouts after Jan 1, 2016 start under the new requirements immediately.

On Jan 1, 2017 all must transition to the new requirements regardless of which rank they are on.

The Boy Scout Transition FAQ had these and many other answers. You can find that and more on the Program Updates page (the same page as the Cub Scout and Venturing updates).

One other "unfinished" CS item is the "Individual Advancement Record" reports. This still pulls up an empty 2010 report even though BSA has had the new forms available for several months (Tiger #220-114; Wolf #220-115; Bear #220-116; Webelos/AoL #220-117).
