Scoutbook Users,

The Boy Scouts of America today announced it has acquired Scoutbook and will work to make it available to the broader Scouting family.

The Scoutbook team is honored that the BSA recognizes the value of the unit-experience and unit-management tools that we created to enhance your Scouting experience. Rest assured that we are working closely with the National Council on transitioning Scoutbook to become a BSA wholly owned and operated resource in a way that continues to ensure a positive experience for you, our existing users.

While this transition occurs, you will notice no other immediate changes to Scoutbook, and your experience as an existing user will not be affected.

Visit Scouting Wire today for additional information, including an FAQ. In the weeks and months ahead, we will communicate more about the transition of Scoutbook to the BSA, sharing details as they become available. In addition to watching for communications like this one from the Scoutbook team, please stay tuned to Scouting Wire for updates on our progress and what this change will mean for you in the long term.

Thank you for your continued support of Scoutbook. We truly value your support and look forward to working with the BSA to further improve the Scouting experience for you and your unit.

Sincerely,

Shawn Jackson
Scoutbook creator and founder

Awesome news for Scouts, Scouters, and Scoutbook! Scoutbook does it best so I am not a bit surprised. So proud to be part of Scoutbook. Congratulations! @Sandra Goodwin: You can create an "app" for it by logging in to Scoutbook on Safari then from bottom of screen, tell it to add to your Home Screen.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't see how this is good news. Other than you are probably gonna make some money, I am sure that BSA will screw this all up and charge an ARM and a LEG to use it. Please, please, please tell me that is not going to be the case!

I have confidence (well, hope) that the BSA chose Scoutbook because of what it does and build on that. Keeping Shawn on to continue what he started reinforces that thought.

    Congrats.

Sandra - Scoutbook does not need an "app" for a phone. Think of it as an app located on a computer somewhere that your computer/phone is accessing via a browser. It is a web based service which means it translates to any device that has a browser, i.e. your smart phone. That is why it is awesome. Its the same whether you are on your phone or PC.

Cody - My fears exactly. Hopefully BSA just owns it and is having the Scoutbook team continue to run it and manage it.

Congratulations. This is a relief to me. I had read in the new Cub Scout materials that a new advancement system "comparable to third-party tools" would be provided for the new program. I was concerned that I was going to have to transition all our records again.

My experience with the BSA and technology has not been good. From the ongoing requirement to use Internet Explorer for Unit Re-Chartering and advancement to iOS unfriendly my.scouting.com, I have had difficulty with much of BSA's attempts to create a 21st Century interface. Past being prologue, I do not see a good outcome.

Step one: Back up my data!
    Step two: Research alternatives
Step three: Be prepared to move when this program stops serving my needs or raises my subscription cost.

I really hope BSA doesn't get their hands in this and mess it all up. The "new" scouting site and the current advancement site are both terrible!

Glad to hear Shawn will be retained. The news makes me a little nervous. Three things I hope we don't loose from Scoutbook with this merger:

    - Customer Service
    - Understanding of the unique needs of LDS units
    - No dependency on official BSA registrations

The last one could be solved by making the BSA Adult/Youth Application process as easy as creating a Scoutbook account or moving a scout to a new unit within Scoutbook. Wouldn't that be a dream.

I just found this tonight. (P.S. I AM trained in my position, but that position happens to be a Sea Scout Skipper - is that coming soon?) We have an immense ship and really need these tools.
I am not going to comment on what BSA will or will not do with it, but this has potential. We are also about to charter a huge Venture Crew and I can't wait to introduce our people to this tool! Thank you!

@ Christopher Billiau then you must not be doing a lot of actual scouting. When I do scouting, especially camping trips I have no access to internet. How can I check to see what requirements the boys in my Cub Scout den, for my son and his patrol need to meet certain merit badges. If I can't look up Scout book, I have no way of knowing, therefore it becomes useless. Having an offline component where these things are saved on my device, will allow me to look up what requirements they need to complete ranks merit badges excetera while out in the field where there is no wifi. I have been asking for this since I started using Skype booked in 2013. An offline component that will save yours your and your staff information on your device, and will automatically sync the information whenever you are connected via WiFi or a network. That is the only thing missing that would make Scout book perfect in my opinion, besides adding in the rest of the BSA programs, and adults awards.

Shawn, congratulations. I hope that scoutbook continues to be an excellent and wonderful service. There is potential for greatness in the integration, and also potential for a big ball of mess. I want to leave this comments as positive as possible, because this is Scouting. However, the BSA has a mixed record at best with IT. See the clunky and buggy tools we have to use at myscouting.scouting.org and the painful user interface and slow service access at my.scouting.org as examples.

Done right, this is great news. I hope that the BSA can use this acquisition to develop a well thought out and COMMUNICATED IT strategy. One of the best things about scoutbook is Shawn's attention to user comments, and the decisions made about feature sets as a result of those user comments. None of this in IT has never been a BSA strong point.

BTW, communication does not mean a bunch of powerpoint presentations to download!

Other than giving Shawn the resources he needs to grow the platform faster (hopefully the Venturing side will be released for everyone, not just beta, shortly), the BSA should leave him alone and let him continue on his current trajectory. This platform is slick and user friendly (unlike the recharter and advancement platforms) and no good can come from the developers of those platforms gumming this one up.

I have been an Adult Scouter for 28 years, and a registered scout since 1974, I have used 7 different tracking software programs, all had their pluses and all had minuses all promised to be scout net accessible, again some partially hit the mark and some could not get it right. This software looks promising, and with the new My Scouting Tools, this should work well. I remember when re-charter was with punch cards, again another beta test that did not work so well.

I think this is a smart move on BSA's part and this could be really great. As a customer though, I fear that BSA is going to drop the ball on this as they have many times in the past. Buying software doesnt fix the problem and can actually cause more problems if no plan is in place. They need to add development staff to Shawn's team and get this thing moving. Get some of these wish list items knocked out and start thinking online registration with payment options.

As we are just days away from summer and the new Cub Scout program roll-out, there needs to be a BIG push to get Scoutbook up and running with new features, new look (BSA skinned), and responses to people's requests for information. I feel that since the initial announcement, everything has gone dark. BSA, if you are listening, people want to USE this tool! They want to use it offline THIS SUMMER. They want to be able to have you support Shawn in the development of new tools and features, so there needs to be more information coming from BSA. What about a twitter feed of new planned features? I see one or two Cub Scout posts on Facebook every single day about the new program and summer events. Nothing about Scoutbook though. What about closing down a bunch of old blog posts and forum discussions on this site about NON-Scoutbook items? Clean it up, get it moving, and let us really start using it!

PLEASE don't let BSA get their hands on it and try to "improve" it!!! Our council along with two others merge with Chicago and its been nothing but a DISASTER!!! This is a great soft ware and it does amazing things. It is easy to sell the program to scouting units and I suggest that you drop the discount offers for recruiting units. As scouters we should help units become acquainted with the program as a good turn.
Also stop the graduated pricing and make it a flat fee of $1.00 per boy per year. That would simplify things for all units.

Definitely needs an app. Apps are far superior to web based software. With web based software every graphic, every element, plus the data AND the code has to be downloaded like any other website during use. With an actual app, performance is increased three fold because only the data needs to be downloaded. Which is very small. Things like icons and graphics are built into the app and other things like photos can be more permanently cached. Offline modes are even possible.
